JAPANESE FORMALITIES :
THE PARAGON OF A PERFECT WOMAN

ART DIRECTION / DESIGN

Why are women not seeing more progress in Japan? How do outdated customs perpetuate patriarchal systems? How can we preserve the beautiful parts of culture while jettisoning the anachronisms which limit gender equality?

This website outlines the rules of social engagement defined by gender and class hierarchies within modern Japan. Using informational aesthetics of popular Japanese manuals, and the social critique angle of Jorgen Leth’s 1967 satirical cult short film “The Perfect Human,”
I cast myself as the paragon of a perfect Japanese woman; cataloguing these strict formalities in exact detail.
